College students and young professionals alike have volunteered with Future Voters of America for eight years through our Youth Politics Internship Program. FVA emphasizes a skill-set most other non-profit organizations cannot: flexibility, professionalism, and communication. Our interns act as liaisons for the organization in a wide variety of situations. They have presented our efforts to lower the voting age, invited high school students to join the FVA Youth Congress, and have hosted workshops on city government. Interns have met with elected officials on a city and state level (always with a student leader) to discuss resolutions passed by previous Youth Congresses. Interns have acted as task force members for various projects with managers and department heads of such organizations as the Police Athletic League, AmeriCorps, Pace University, the Department of Education and the United Federation of Teachers. Often, an intern is expected to perform this varied range of representation within the same week, or even the same day. Thus, our internship program focuses heavily on developing a strong skills base in communication. Other duties include planning the logistics of debates, workshops and the Youth Congress, scheduling meetings with officials, interns, and other organizations, and maintaining the FVA listserv. Naturally, one intern will not be responsible for all of these duties. We tailor our internships to the strengths and preferences of each particular intern, to maximize the benefits to both the individual and the organization. We believe our flexibility provides a rewarding experience to our interns, who constantly update us on their professional careers and check in on our progression. The skills I use at my job now I didn’t learn in college; I learned at Future Voters. Planning projects from the get-go and seeing them through, solving real life problems, pitching the organization to high school students and elected officials: these experiences have been an invaluable part of my life. I can directly see how my time and efforts have helped make this organization grow to what it is.”Joshua Garcia Future Voters Intern since June 2003 |
